The Surfers

Surfing With The Enemy is the story of six surfers from Havana struggling to carve out a niche for their sport in Cuba’s restrictive society.

Eduardo Valdes, founder of the Havana Surf Association and one of Cuba’s only shapers, is the leader of this underground surf community. Eduardo serves as our guide to this surf-rich island nation, and along the way he’s joined by some of the country’s top talent, including Umberto, Cuba’s best surfer and skateboarder; Frank, also one of the nation’s best at BMX; Brian, the country’s first black surfer; and Lorena, Cuba’s first female surfer.

When these six surfers set out on a trip across the island to the notorious Guantanamo Province in search of the country’s best wave, they find a forgotten paradise just miles from the American border, and uncover what it means to be a surfer and a citizen of modern-day Cuba.
